The intersection hasn’t been closed before and we don’t have crashes, why now?

Having two intersections that are so close, with the risk of cars turning across each other, on a high speed road is not ideal. The Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency sought the closure of the intersection in 2003 and 2013.

Sealing Perymans Road to the State Highway is likely to lead to an increase in traffic that will increase the risk at the intersection.

Can’t you seal the road and leave the intersection open?

If the intersection remains open, the road will need to be widened and the intersection will need to be redesigned to ensure safety. Both of these would come with a significant increase in cost and in time to design and complete the work.

It would mean delaying the sealing and would be subject to agreement by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and by the Council balancing the impact on other agreed projects.
