General speed limit changes

CLOSED: This discussion has concluded.

New national regulations on how speed limits can be set and a new national register of speed limits are expected to come into force at the end of the year. These will replace our Selwyn District Council Speed Limits Bylaw and Speed Limits Register.

Under the new national regulations, we will need to produce a speed management plan for our district. To help inform the plan, we would like to hear your initial views on the following four possible future speed limit changes:

  • Reduce the speed limits on local urban roads to 40km/hr
  • Reduce the speed limits on local unsealed rural roads to 80km/hr
  • A new permanent speed limit of 30km/hr outside urban schools
  • A new permanent speed limit of 60km/hr outside rural schools.
