Update - final report
The feedback provided in this Forum has been integrated into the final road safety research project report.
The report also includes results from a survey of residents in each district in the wider Canterbury region.
The final research report is yet to be made public but we will have it available on this page over the next couple of months. The research project has provided valuable insight into the concerns and attitudes concerning road safety in our region and will help inform future education and promotional activities undertaken by Councils to influence and motivate safer road use.
Residents of Darfield - please help make our roads safer to travel
This research project aims to find out about Darfield residents' perceptions of local road safety issues, and to help us understand how to manage these issues.
What is this information going to be used for?
This online forum is part of a Canterbury-wide research project being run by all councils across Canterbury, and coordinated by Research First, an independent Christchurch-based research company. This project aims to better inform how councils work to improve road safety in their local areas.
The information collected here will also be used by Road Safety Coordinators to inform policy and communications about road safety.
The target
Road Safety coordinators from across Canterbury have built a road safety strategy targeting zero road deaths and serious injuries on roads in the Selwyn district and the wider Canterbury region.
Where do you come in?
The Council has set up an online community forum specifically for Darfield, dedicated to road safety. This is because Darfield has been selected as representative of a typical rural town in Canterbury, and the information collected will help to improve road safety promotion in wider Canterbury region.
Darfield residents' comments will help us to understand:
- what you think are the major road safety issues are in your area
- the ways that we should/shouldn't promote improving road safety
- how we can reduce the risk of death or serious injury on our roads.
This is a unique opportunity to make your voice heard, and be part of a community helping to shape road safety policy in Darfield and the wider Canterbury region. Anyone can join in, as long as you live in the local area and use the roads in some way.
How much of my time will this take?
We’re asking for an hour or so of your time every week, for the next six weeks, to be part of a conversation with us and your fellow residents. We’ll be asking you to take quizzes, join in debates, upload your stories, and most importantly, give your point of view.
It’s a great opportunity to make your voice heard about how safe you think that the roads in Darfield are, and what can be done to increase road safety.
We drive individually, but our road safety is a collective responsibility. Nobody thinks a road accident is going to happen to them. But sometimes things go wrong, and incidents happen. It’s only by working together that we can understand what causes them, and make Darfield a safer community.
