Residents of Darfield - please help make our roads safer to travel
This research project aims to find out about Darfield residents' perceptions of local road safety issues, and to help us understand how to manage these issues.
What is this information going to be used for?
This online forum is part of a Canterbury-wide research project being run by all councils across Canterbury, and coordinated by Research First, an independent Christchurch-based research company. This project aims to better inform how councils work to improve road safety in their local areas.
The information collected here will also be used by Road Safety Coordinators to inform policy and communications about road safety.
The target
Road Safety coordinators from across Canterbury have built a road safety strategy targeting zero road deaths and serious injuries on roads in the Selwyn district and the wider Canterbury region.
Where do you come in?
The Council has set up an online community forum specifically for Darfield, dedicated to road safety. This is because Darfield has been selected as representative of a typical rural town in Canterbury, and the information collected will help to improve road safety promotion in wider Canterbury region.
Darfield residents' comments will help us to understand:
- what you think are the major road safety issues are in your area
- the ways that we should/shouldn't promote improving road safety
- how we can reduce the risk of death or serious injury on our roads.
This is a unique opportunity to make your voice heard, and be part of a community helping to shape road safety policy in Darfield and the wider Canterbury region. Anyone can join in, as long as you live in the local area and use the roads in some way.
How much of my time will this take?
We’re asking for an hour or so of your time every week, for the next six weeks, to be part of a conversation with us and your fellow residents. We’ll be asking you to take quizzes, join in debates, upload your stories, and most importantly, give your point of view.
It’s a great opportunity to make your voice heard about how safe you think that the roads in Darfield are, and what can be done to increase road safety.
We drive individually, but our road safety is a collective responsibility. Nobody thinks a road accident is going to happen to them. But sometimes things go wrong, and incidents happen. It’s only by working together that we can understand what causes them, and make Darfield a safer community.

Prioritising road safety issues in Darfield
by Alasdair, about 6 years agoShare Prioritising road safety issues in Darfield on Facebook Share Prioritising road safety issues in Darfield on Twitter Share Prioritising road safety issues in Darfield on Linkedin Email Prioritising road safety issues in Darfield linkCLOSED: This discussion has concluded. Now we've had a few submissions on our road safety issues map (please keep them coming!), we're starting to see a few common themes.
The issues you've all identified so far are split between physical issues (for example, potholes, visibility issues, and inadequate signage) and risky behaviour (e.g. drivers not obeying speed limits, no stopping signs or stop signs). Which do you think is more important to address?
Quite a few have identified specific issues regarding school children - in your view, does the presence of children make the issue a higher priority? How about for cyclists, or pedestrians, who are less protected?
And how about the type of vehicle? There have been issues identified around trains and heavy trucks, which are less common vehicles but potentially pose a higher risk. Does that make these road safety issues more important?
We'd love to hear your views. All views are valid - and of course please remember our Forum Etiquette Guide.
