Driving safer

One

I am a bus driver for a living and the thinks we see when driving is insane, one of the problems in darfield i have is parents dropping kids of out side the high school, where it says 'NO STOPPING between 8.30-9am and 3-3.30pm  and they are still stopping there and one of our drivers nearly took a door off as the kid got out on the road side of the car.

Two

Cars not slowing when the bus is picking up in mornings or dropping off in afternoon's, the worst for this are skier's, perents and some students.

Coming home to Darfield from Christchurch in the rain in the evening (9pm) and towing a trailer, as we got to the Bealey Road corner on the Main West Coast Road, we had to swerve to take evasive action to avoid hitting a small car that was parked facing us and stationary on our side of the road. The car was turning from the Kirwee side into Bealey Road, and I can only guess the driver didn't realise quite where they had stopped. Could easily have been a head on accident.

You are so right and this is a situation that I have seen occurring not just outside of Darfield High school. I know of a bus driver that has unfortunately clipped a door.

You're right. The speed past a school bus dropping off kids is 20 kmh, either way, but people appear to have forgotten that as soon as they get their licence.

Hi Mandy.cow, thanks for your story! You must have seen a lot as a bus driver, I wonder has it changed the way you drive (or ride, or walk!) when you're not in the bus? Your story about the no stopping zone outside the high school is a great one. Would you be able to drop a pin in the map (link below) to show us exactly where? https://yoursay.selwyn.govt.nz/darfield-road-safety-forum/maps/map-of-road-risks-darfield
