Nominating a Heritage Item
Nominations for new heritage items to be included in the proposed District Plan has concluded closed at 5pm on Monday 5 March 2018.
As part of reviewing the current Selwyn District Plan, the Council ran a public consultation from late January to early March to hear from residents whether they knew of any potential heritage items that could be included in the proposed Plan. We wanted to know whether there were any other building, structures or other items that the public believes have heritage value and need to be protected for our current and future generations living in the district.
Following the public engagement we received over 40 nominations from the public for new heritage items to be listed in the proposed District Plan. Another 50 potential items have been identified by Dr Ann McEwan, a heritage specialist who has been engaged by the Council to assist in the review of existing heritage items listed in the current District Plan, and any heritage items identified through the public nomination process.
The nominations are currently being reviewed, which includes consulting with affected landowners. Later this year (expected to be in July/August) the Council will be consulting on the draft list of protected heritage items to be included in the Proposed District Plan as well the proposed policies and rules for managing heritage items.

As part of the Council’s review of
the current District Plan, the provisions relating to heritage items are also
being reviewed. This means we are looking at currently listed heritage items and
whether they should remain listed; whether any other items should be added and
also whether current policies and rules protecting heritage items need to be
updated.
