The unsealed portion of Perymans Road is on the list of roads to be sealed in this financial year.
The Council is proposing to seal the unsealed portion of Perymans Road before July 2023 to reduce dust and improve the experience for residents and road users, particularly the high number of recreational users who use the road for horse riding, cycling and walking.
To do this, the Council is proposing to create a cycling and walking entrance only to Perymans Road at the State Highway 75 intersection and close the intersection to cars, trucks and motorcycles to improve safety for users of Perymans Road, State Highway 75 and Lincoln Tai Tapu Road.
As part of this project we are also proposing to create a cycling and walking entrance only to Perymans Road at the State Highway 75 intersection and close the intersection to cars, trucks and motorcycles to improve safety for users of Perymans Road, State Highway 75 and Lincoln Tai Tapu Road.
Closure of the intersection to vehicles is supported by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency due to safety concerns.
Perymans Road is a local road, not designed for an increase in traffic as a connector road to the State Highway. It is popular with cyclists and horse riders and was agreed with the public as a key cycle route linking Tai Tapu and Lincoln in the Council’s 2018 Walking and Cycling Strategy.
Lincoln Tai Tapu Road provides easy access to State Highway 75 close by. However, having two intersections to the State Highway so close together has long caused safety concerns. Confusion and conflicts occur between vehicles turning off the highway and their intention to use one or the other of the intersections from the State Highway, as well as from cars turning from these local roads onto the highway.
An increase of cars using Perymans Road to access the State Highway would increase those risks and the risks for current residents and road users.
